CEP America has announced that R. Myles Riner, MD has been named the 2010 recipient of the “Excellence in Health Policy” award from the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP).
Each year, ACEP presents this award to a member who has made a significant contribution to achieving the College’s health policy objectives, or who has demonstrated outstanding skills, talent, and commitment as an administrative or political leader.
Through his work on regulatory and legislative issues, and as a member of the Board of Directors of the California chapter of ACEP (CAL/ACEP) in which he also served a term as President, Dr. Riner was able to make a significant contribution as an advocate for emergency physicians and the emergency care safety net. As a member of the ACEP Reimbursement Committee, he drafted model legislation and fair payment principles, which have become the backbone of an advocacy “toolkit” for state ACEP chapters faced with balance billing prohibitions.
Dr. Riner was nominated by his peers on the CAL/ACEP Board in recognition of the time and effort he has contributed, and continues to make, in support of health care policy advocacy at the state and national level.
Support from CEP America
According to Dr. Riner, none of this success would have been possible without the support of his long-time medical practice partners at CEP America. “CEP America gave me the opportunity to practice the art of medicine on behalf of my patients in the ED, and the business of medicine on behalf of my partnership. CEP America leadership gave me the chance to broaden my expertise, and have a career that goes beyond clinical practice.”
Thirty years ago, Dr. Riner joined CEP America, and it was during his time as the ED Medical Director at Doctor’s Medical Center in Modesto, CA, that he began to work with what he calls “the outstanding staff at MedAmerica and MBSI” on billing, managed care contracting, regulatory, and compliance issues. He eventually served as the Director of Provider Relations for CEP America for several years. Now retired from clinical practice, Dr. Riner works as a consultant to CEP America, he’s mentoring two new physicians to take up the provider relations role for the partnership, and continues his advocacy work with CAL/ACEP and ACEP.
“Supporting its Partners in health policy and advocacy roles at this level is a very powerful decision that CEP America has made on behalf of the Partnership, and all emergency physicians and their patients,” said Dr. Riner. “I greatly appreciate the impact that this decision has had on my career.”
