(January 2007, Emeryville, California) CEP’s First Annual Senior Resident’s Day was held on January 25th in Emeryville, California. The CEP New Partner Committee organized the event as a way to address the lack of career orientation available to residency graduates as they enter the practicing medical community. Graduates from residency programs in Arizona, California, Georgia, and Oregon were invited, but news of this exciting program spread so rapidly, however, that residents from as far as New York requested an invitation. Over twenty residents were in attendance, representing twelve different residency programs.
The one day event was packed with informative and educational material. CEP Officers, Partners, and affiliates presented on a number of topics of special interest to senior residents. The morning session began with a presentation on the history of CEP and emergency medicine, followed by a lesson on the 7 Habits of an Effective New Clinician. The residents then learned valuable tips about billing and coding and had a lively discussion about benefits and how to choose the right benefit plan. The morning session finished with a round-table Q&A session with the CEP New Partner Committee members. After lunch, residents were advised on finding a job and the various options available in post-residency emergency medicine practices. Attendees were then challenged by a lecture about the technological changes and current practices of emergency medicine. The event concluded with a unique opportunity for the residents to spend one on one time with CEP’s regional directors and recruiting team.
Here is what some of the residents had to say about the program:
“Excellent overall program; would recommend to my future residents.”
“Fabulous coverage of topics, good educational experience that I would recommend to all residents.”
“The wonderful, passionate, yet laid-back Partners really impressed me.”
“A great day. It was a very unique opportunity to learn a lot about CEP and emergency medicine in general that we didn’t learn in residency!”
Overall, CEP’s First Annual Senior Resident’s Day was extremely successful. The results were so positive, that the New Partner Committee has already begun to work on CEP’s 2nd Annual Senior Resident’s Day agenda. The goal is to make this event a useful resource for senior residents throughout the nation, providing important clinical guidance and career advice to emergency medicine residents in a crucial decision-making time.
