(August 2005, Emeryville, California) --California Emergency Physicians Medical Group (CEP) would like to extend its congratulations to Ghazala Sharieff, MD, of Pomerado Hospital and Palomar Medical Center on her new position as Co-Chair of the ACEP Pediatric Emergency Medicine Committee.

Effective October of 2005, she will work alongside Jill Baren, MD, in disseminating important information about the latest advances in pediatric emergency care to general ER physicians, in order to promote the emergency care of children.

According to Dr. Sharieff, the pediatric committee works directly with the ACEP Board to meet objectives pertaining to emergency medicine and children. For instance, the committee is currently writing four papers on the following topics: ED overcrowding and how it relates to children, family-centered emergency care, pediatric mental health, and patient safety in the ED.

Dr. Sharieff signed on as Co-Chair because she has been involved in the committee for three years and also served as the ACEP Pediatric Section Chair several years ago. She feels she can “…help keep emergency physicians abreast of important issues relating to the care of children, and be a voice for their concerns.”

As Co-Chair, she will share responsibilities with Dr. Baren. Because the purely voluntary position requires a lot of outside time and commitment, both women decided that with their own children and careers, they could only “do the position justice” by sharing the responsibilities. Of her Co-Chair, Dr. Sharieff says “she is a leader in the field of pediatric emergency medicine” and is very much looking forward to working with Dr. Baren.

Dr. Sharieff received a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Michigan and her medical degree from the Michigan State University School of Medicine. She completed her residency at Stanford University, followed by a Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship at Children’s Hospital and Health Center in San Diego.
