(October 2006, Emeryville, California) CEP America has awarded emergency physician Elaine Nelson, MD, with a 2006 Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Nelson works in the CEP-America staffed emergency department (ED) of Regional Medical Center of San Jose, California. The leadership team of CEP America selected Dr. Nelson out of over 900 emergency physicians eligible for this award; only five individuals were honored. The award was presented to Dr. Nelson at CEP America’s Annual Partnership Meeting held this year in Palm Desert on October 30th.

Distinguished Service Awards are given to individuals who display clinical superiority, leadership, patient rapport, proper documentation, diplomacy and dedication. Dr. Nelson received this award for excelling in all of these categories. Not only is she a clinically superior emergency physician, she is also a great leader in physician, nurse practitioner, and physician assistant relations. In 2006, Dr. Nelson and physician assistant Cyndy Flores, PA-C, received the PAragon Award from the American Academy of Physician Assistants. The award is given annually to only one physician and physician assistant team in the country.

The Regional Medical Center of San Jose provides emergency services to central and east San Jose. The emergency department, a comprehensive trauma center, consists of 34 beds and is staffed 24 hours daily. In December 2004, CEP's Rapid Medical Evaluation Program© (RME) was implemented in the ED with the objective of dramatically reducing patient wait times. The program has been very successful, and since implementation, average wait times have dropped by over 15%.
