(November 2006, California) – As a result of the reputation of California Emergency Physicians Medical Group (CEP) as the premier emergency physician group in California, Shasta Emergency Medical Group (SEMG) has decided to merge their practice with CEP. The current emergency department physicians will continue to serve the Mercy Medical Center–Redding and St. Elizabeth Community Hospital–Red Bluff communities providing emergency care for 72,000 patients annually. Both hospitals are part of the Catholic Healthcare West System whose respective administrations have endorsed the merger. Set to take place January 1, 2007, this merger will increase the number of CEP-staffed CHW emergency department sites to eight.

“We are very excited and optimistic about this upcoming partnership between our doctors and CEP,” comments Dr. Timothy Pangborn, SEMG partner and Chairman of SEMG Board. “We see this new relationship offering many resources to our current physician partners as well as to the emergency medicine nurses and administration at our respective hospitals. This affiliation will help us continue to pursue common goals with our hospitals of offering the best of excellence in emergency patient care in the North State.”

In this age of healthcare complexity, CEP’s innovation and proven processes helped establish its national standing and has also attracted the attention of several groups who have chosen to merge their practices with CEP. The benefits of this choice are many. Through its network of nearly 60 emergency department sites, CEP can readily make available proven products, management services and programs at its ED client sites. The Group has also been able to dedicate significant resources to address problems in ED management, staffing, and patient care, as well as bring economies of scale which benefit all Partners at each client hospital emergency department. In short, CEP’s Power of Partnership lies in its ability to offer its physicians a career that sustains quality of practice along with quality of life.

Dr. Ted Kloth, CEP’s Vice President of Business Development says, “We look forward to expanding our presence in Northern California, particularly by merging with such a high-caliber group as SEMG. The enthusiasm and camaraderie we have enjoyed thus far, from both providers and administration alike really set a positive tone for our new partnership and provides the perfect foundation for a long-lasting and successful relationship.”
