(May 2007, Emeryville, California) CEP America, the nation’s largest emergency physician partnership, has named the emergency department (ED) team at Corona Regional Medical Center 2006 ED Team of the Year. Out of over 50 EDs eligible for this award, Corona was chosen for creating a team environment in the ED that fosters cooperation, positive morale, and a drive for clinical and service excellence in patient care.
Under the leadership of ED Medical Director Michael Bear, MD, the ED team has been able to sustain an amazing level of performance. Despite a construction project that dramatically decreased the ED space for the majority of 2006, over 45,000 patients were treated. Even in the temporarily cramped space, the ED team was able to maintain low wait times for patients and high satisfaction for both medical providers and patients. This performance is thanks in large part to the implementation of CEP America’s Rapid Medical Evaluation Program© (RME), a customizable patient processing program that is improving ED efficiency at a wide variety of sites.
The ability to provide patients with the best in emergency care is just one of the factors that make provider satisfaction at Corona so high, but another important factor is the ED team spirit. At Corona, the entire ED team is involved in every aspect of medical care, from both the clinical and management side. Attendance of the team at ED meetings is nearly 100% and everyone has a say on ED issues. The team is regularly recognized for their positive contributions and given opportunities to learn and teach new skills. Matt Sartain and Nancy Carlson, CEP America Practice Management Consultants, commented on their assessment team’s findings, “Overall, the assessment team was very impressed with the collegiality and camaraderie that exists among the physicians, mid-level providers, nursing, and ED staff at Corona. The spirit of ‘teamwork’ is definitely present in this department.”
Corona Regional Medical Center (CRMC) enjoys a somewhat unique situation in the highly competitive Inland Empire, less than an hour away from Los Angeles, in that it is nearly a sole provider for a young, affluent, rapidly growing population of 196,000 people. The 14-bed basic level ED at Corona Regional Medical Center is available 24-hours a day, 7 days-a-week. Board certified physicians and nurses who are trained in cardiac life support staff the department.
